Deftones Damsel "Gaze Into the Lens" is immersive and illuminant: it's human existence in a place that shouldn’t be real, where you feel the air force itself down your throat. It's here and now, taking you by surprise with its unrelenting honesty. Listening to "Captive," time drips like honey. The build is climbing a mountain; rocks pierce your shoes, but you keep moving. The peak never seemed so far away, but the apex is all out glory when you arrive. I could go on about each individual song, but I'll stop myself and just say the pulse rushing, head reeling, face flushing moments in this album are infinite. Favorite track: Captive.

They're always watching. They're always watching. They've got their eyes on you. They've got their eyes on you. Investigating Anticipating If you've done nothing wrong Well, it won't be long. These walls, transparent. And it's apparent That you can't hide from them. There's no disguise from them. 'Cause they're always watching. They're always watching. They've got their eyes on you. They've got their eyes on you. Look into the camera, child Let's see what fate awaits you. Gaze into the lens, my friend. Let justice swiftly take you. Fret not, my darling; It's not so alarming. Though the mark has been made, Your short memory will fade. Look into the camera, child Let's see what fate awaits you. Gaze into the lens, my friend. Let justice swiftly take you. Look into the camera, child Let's see what fate awaits you. Gaze into the lens, my friend. Let the system violate you. -- They say the life we're living here Is one worthy of a look They say "if you've got nothing to hide You should be an open book" Have you read the news today? Far and wide, the voices cry Through the camera lens, we roam And run, but cannot hide -- We stand on the brink of something The future's coming The watchers are watching Dividing us into warring factions With propaganda It's just a distraction Why are we fighting each other When we could fight them together? If we don't unite against the oppressors We'll be crushed under the pressure. They're always watching They're always watching They've got their eyes on you They've got their eyes on you They're always watching They're always watching They've got their eyes on you What are you gonna do?

Lullaby Rain 05:12
The thunder shook me Out of my dream And the wind kept me awake. The persistent tapping Above my head Is more than I can take. Looking the storm in the eye I can only see your face I never meant to fall behind I never meant to fall from grace. My heart is racing As I struggle to stay sane And I pretend I'll be OK-- And I listen to the lullaby rain As it dances on the rooftop. I hear it sing your name. The days are wretched The nights are worse And the thunderhead looms above Lumbering onward Like a skybound hearse; A symbol of our dying love. Looking the storm in the eye I can only wish you the best I never meant to steal your time I never meant to make a mess. My heart is aching As I sift through the remains. And I long for one more day-- And I'm taunted by the lullaby rain As it dances on the rooftop. I hear it sing your name. My heart is breaking As I sever every chain. And I keep the tears at bay-- And I curse the lullaby rain As it dances on the rooftop. I hear it sing your name.

Eyes upon the door My heart upon the floor The surface appears unscathed Pictures flood my mind Photographs from better times In each corner of my brain I scream on the inside But I never make a sound Hope is gone tonight I don't know why Shadows haunt the hall, The mirror on the wall, And the bricks only hold me in Always isolated No matter my place in the crowd Hope is gone tonight I don't know why I stand before the mirror Resigned to my fate That one day, I'm gonna pack it in But, for now, I'm gonna keep on livin' Don't want to go on this time But I have to try.

Punish Me 03:59
Well, you had me fooled back then Yeah, but now I see the proof You're out for only yourself You're out to make your own truth I'm on to you I see the malice in your eyes Your followers still grovel at your feet Believing every fucking lie Wipe that smile Off your face It's too late to change what you've become The song is sung I'm over this charade You've punished me enough for today Punish me Punish me You can't take It all back You can't give What you don't have But I have learned To trust so few 'Cause I trusted you And you became someone new Wipe that smile Off your face It's too late to change what you've become The song is sung I'm over this charade You've punished me enough for today Absolve yourself of guilt Tear down what's been built Keep me in chains Make me feel your pain

Captive 09:14
Someone whispered to him She told every lie she knew He could not see through it all. Her expression was a veil Her words were like ice Frozen, he began to fall. "Just breathe, my baby." "Come to my arms." "Don't speak -- Let me hold you." "I will never let you leave." Over the years, it seemed The hours passed like days She still wouldn't let him go. Desperate for contact On the brink forever He finally slipped away. "Just breathe, my baby." "Come to my arms." "Don't speak -- Let me hold you." "I will never let you leave."

the memories that always last ghosts from the distant past severed from the daily prayer circumstances beyond repair but the truth resides in plain sight and the dreams are the same every night there's no clear divide between us after all nothing left to hide, it's written on the wall you can't reach the highest peak without a fall there's no clear divide between us after all the promises we swore to keep still stir me in my sleep those sweet lies in my ears will torture me for a thousand years and what could have been is dead and gone but your voice still rings on and on there's no clear divide between us after all nothing left to hide, it's written on the wall you can't reach the highest peak without a fall there's no clear divide between us after all and the truth still burns in my mind and the dreams still return all the time there's no clear divide between us after all nothing left to hide, it's written on the wall you can't reach the highest peak without a fall there's no clear divide between us after all after all

It's been so long I've been so much Less than strong And all this time Through all this pain I just wanted to fix things But things just are The way they are The way they'll always be And though I see You've found someone new I don't blame you (sifting through the remains) (longing for one more day) I can still feel (struggling to stay sane) Your warm embrace (pretending i'll be ok) Your gentle kiss It's been so long (sifting through the remains) I've been so much (longing for one more day) Less than strong And all this time (struggling to stay sane) Through all this pain (pretending i'll be ok) I wish I could have saved us Sifting through the remains Longing for one more day.

Baptize me in the river Soon enough I'll breathe your air Promise love and trust and charity Show me that you really care Stop. Rewind. Press Record. I don't want to lose you. Stop. Rewind. Press Record. You don't want to miss this. Persuade us with revelation Drown out dissent among the crowd Sing to me your song of glory Sing to me so very loud Stop. Rewind. Press Record. I don't want to lose you. Stop. Rewind. Press Record. You don't want to miss this. Images flash But the tape is worn From deceiving countless souls And closing countless doors Just a log of this case for divinity This epiphany Just futility Hiding deep within obscurity Truth shrouded in mystery True salvation is just learning To cope with this uncertainty Stop. Rewind. Press Record. I don't want to lose you. Stop. Rewind. Press Record. You don't want to miss this. Hiding deep within obscurity Truth shrouded in mystery True salvation is just learning To cope with this uncertainty
